Manchester City XI vs Watford: Predicted lineup, confirmed team news and injury latest for Premier League

Kyle Walker is a doubt for Manchester City’s home match against Watford on Saturday.

The defender is struggling with an ankle injury and faces a late fitness test ahead of the game at the Etihad.

Asked about Walker on Friday, City manager Pep Guardiola said: “He is getting better. We will see tomorrow.”

John Stones and Nathan Ake also face late fitness tests after they were were forced off in the midweek 3-0 win over Brighton.

City returned to the top of the table with that victory on Wednesday night but the result appears to have come at a cost, with the duo potentially depleting the backline even further.

Ruben Dias has only recently made his return to action after a hamstring injury.

Further forward, there are no such concerns, although City’s huge Champions League semi-final meeting with Real Madrid could come into Guardiola’s thinking. It is very much a case of balancing things.

On paper, the champions should have enough to deal with a Watford side plummeting towards relegation, although the absences are certainly a worry.

Manchester City predicted XI (4-3-3): Ederson, Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Zinchenko, Fernandinho, Silva, Gundogan, Jesus, Foden, Grealish

Doubts: Stones, Ake, Walker

Pep Guardiola has given an injury update on John Stones and Nathan Ake, as both limped out of Manchester City's win over Brighton this week.

City are back in action on Saturday as Roy Hodgson's Watford visit the Etihad, looking to keep alive their slim survival chances. Guardiola confirmed that Stones felt tightness in his muscle while Ake had a twisted ankle against Brighton, causing both to be replaced in the game.

Ruben Dias made a welcome return from injury, but Kyle Walker was missing again and Guardiola offered an update on the right-back, too.

Guardiola was also be asked about Manchester United's appointment of Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag, while he has always been full of admiration for Watford boss Roy Hodgson, as the pair face each other on Saturday. If City win, they can go four points ahead of Liverpool before Jurgen Klopp's men face Everton on Sunday.

Manchester City still lead the race for the title by a point going into the final six games of the Premier League season.

They responded to Liverpool’s 4-0 drubbing of Manchester United with a comfortable 3-0 win over Brighton on Wednesday. Pep Guardiola said his team must be perfect for the rest of the campaign in order to retain the crown with any draws being catastrophic.

He will be confident that his team can gain maximum points over Watford, who languish firmly in the relegation zone some seven points from safety having lost their last three outings. A win will see City temporarily extend their lead to four points ahead of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby with Everton on Sunday.
